JAMES STIRLING, SON CAPTAIN 42ND R. H / DIED 20TH JAN 1818 AGED 25.
Ensign 8 Aug 1805. Lt 27 Aug 1807. Capt 11 May 1815. With Portuguese Army: Capt 11th Line 1813.
Served in the Peninsula Sep with 42nd Foot 1808 - Jan 1809 and May 1812 - Aug 1813 (from Oct 1812 ADC to his father Major General James Stirling). Present at Corunna, Salamanca, Burgos and Pyrenees. On his father's retirement in November 1813 joined the Portuguese Army as Captain 11th Line. Served with them Nov 1813 - Apr 1814. Also served at Walcheren 1809. Retired from the army in 1817. Died 20 Jan 1818 aged 25 years. One of the youngest officers to take part in the Peninsular War, he was only 15 years of age at Corunna.[1]
