Both girls must have been sent back to live with a maternal uncle after the death of their mother in 1864. They did go originally to the Falkland Islands with their parents in 1862. Their father travelled a lot and didn't remarry until 1888. Source: Canon Frederick Macdonald, Bishop Stirling of the Falklands, Seeley, Service and Co, 1929.
