James Stites was born on Feb. 19, 1868 and died Sept. 12, 1933. He was my great-uncle (brother to my great-grandfather, Abner Edgar Stites). James spent most of his life in Charleston, Illinois. However, as a teenager (sometime around 1884) he went with his family in a covered wagon to Kansas. His father died in Kansas in March 1885 and the family returned to Illinois soon after. James married Martha Emmeline Toops in 1902 and they had two daughters, Beulah and Lucille.
