Biography

Jonathan Edward Stites was born in Indiana (probably in Rush County) in 1837, the son of Alfred Stites and Elizabeth Elton Shaw. He moved to Missouri with his father and siblings after his mother died in 1848. Jonathan returned to Charleston, IL (Eastern Illinois near the Indiana border) sometime before 1857 when he married Elizabeth J. Green and lived with her on her parents farm near Charleston. When the Civil War ended, Jonathan's younger brother William Stites returned from Kansas and married Jonathan's sister-in-law, Mary Hannah Green. In 1879, Jonathan and his family moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. His children, all but his daughter, Margaret Hester, moved to Arkansas and grew up there. Margaret was the oldest and stayed in Illinois to marry Alexander McKee. Later they moved to California. Jonathan and Elizabeth's oldest son, Charles Albert moved on from Arkansas to Oklahoma. The two younger sons, William Ellison and Joseph Edwards spent most of their lives in Eureka Springs, AR. Jonathan Edward Stites had a second marriage to Martha A. Lawrence. They were married in 1881 and Martha was still living at the time of Jonathan's death in 1918.
