John Stites was the son of Richard Stites and Mary (Underhill) Stites and was almost certainly born on Long Island at the Stites homestead in what is now Old Westbury, Nassau County, New York. John appears in the 1698 Hempstead Census alongside his parents, younger sisters (Mary and Margaret) and brother, William. By 1698, John's older brothers, Henry and Benjamin had moved on from Westbury to Southampton and from there to Cape May, New Jersey to pursue shore whaling, forestry, and farming. John appeared to stay in Westbury, though it was his brother William who inherited his father's land there.
John is mentioned in his father's will which appears in the records of the Special Court Jamaica, Long Island 5th March 1700/1 - Liber A, page 152. The will is dated Nov. 6, 1700 and is under the name "Richard Sticks" (Sticks is a variant spelling of Stites which appears in Long Island records, as is Stiche, Stich, Stits, Stittes, or Stiles). A transcription of the will appears on a webpage created by Simon Parker-Galbreath [1]
