Biography

James Stith's birth and death dates are based on Fletcher Cemetery, Miami Co., OH Records and his birth place of North Carolina is based on Census Records. He was a son of Jesse Stiff/Stith and Amy Williams.

Two important clues regarding James' parentage exist. There is primary source documentation of his son Sylvester Stith being issued "Letters of Guardianship" on 24 Oct 1866 by the Fairfield County Probate Court appointing him guardian of the minors children of Jesse Stith, son of James' brother Rev. Jesse Stith, after this son was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. Sylvester lived neighbor to the sons of Reverend Jesse who had 4 other sons in the area, yet it appears a nephew experienced with the Court was chosen for this job. Another important clue is a letter written long ago by William R. Stith, youngest son of Rev. Jesse Stith, telling us the Reverend's brother James lived "near Dayton" which is where we find James Stith residing by 1820, fifteen years prior to the birth of the author of this letter.

There is a James Stith listed in the 1813 and 1815 (W)VA, Cabell Co. Personal Property Tax lists. Then a James Stith and Tabatha Tucker were issued a Marriage License on 6 July 1816 in Adams Co., OH. James Stith was married, in Adams Co., to Tabita Tucker on 11 Jul 1816 by John Wood. Based on the death record of his first child, Susanna and possibly his second child, Sarah, James was back in (W)VA before he came to Montgomery Co., OH where his third child, Isaac, was born in 1819.

In the 1820 Census, James was in Washington Twp., Montgomery Co., OH and listed with 3 children. the ages of those children matching those of Susanna, Sarah and Isaac. From Ohio Tax Records, in 1829, James was in Sugar Creek Twp., Greene Co., OH. in 1837, he was in Washington Twp., Montgomery Co., OH and in 1840 he was back in Sugar Creek Twp., Greene Co., OH. These two Twps. are adjacent to each other so movement between the two would not have been difficult.

Also in the 1820 Census, next to James Stith, is an Amy Stith. She is in the 45 and over age group. In Amy's household, there is one male in the 10-15 age group and two females in the 10-15 age group.

In the 1830 Census, James "STIFF" is in Sugar Creek Twp. with 9 children listed in the household. He has not been found in the 1840 Census.

In the 1850 Census OH, Montgomery Co., Wayne, James' family is listed as follows

  • Jas. Stith 53 NC Farmer
  • Tabitha J. 62 VA
  • Emily 20 OH
  • Wm. 17 OH
  • Mary Worthington 11 OH
  • Catherine Worthington 12 OH

Mary and Catherine are daughters of John P. Worthington and Sarah Stith.

On 9 Oct 1855, James Stith and wife Tabitha bought from Jesse Stith and wife Barshaba (Bathsheba) , both parties residents of Greene Co., 3 acres of land in Montgomery Co. with the condition that when James and Tabitha passed, the land would revert back to Jesse Stith.

By 1860, James has moved to Brown Twp., Miami Co., OH and is listed as follows

  • James Stith 65 NC Invalid
  • Tabitha 67 MD

Thomas J Stith, wife Rebecca B. and family are living next door.

In 1870, he is still in Brown Twp. but in the household of his daughter, Mary

  • Schremerhorn, John 46 Farmer OH
  • " , Mary 46 OH
  • Stith, James 75 Retired Hatter NC

James has not been found after 1870.

It should be noted that in the Fletcher Cemetery Records, Rebecca B., Thomas J., Tobitha and James STITH are listed as being buried in 1st Addition, Section 1, Lot 220 Spaces 2, 3, 4 and 5. It was evidently a family plot.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
