George was the son of Isaac Stith and Elizabeth Clay. He enlisted and served the Union Army in the 15th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery during the Civil War.
George received an invalids pension from his service. His hospitalization records identify his brother, J. F. (Frank) Stith, and his sister Barbara A. Foreman. The latter sibling received his personal effects after his death in 1921. George was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
