Biography

Putnam Stith was a son of Colonel Robert Stith and Mary Townsend Washington. He was named in his father's will dated 14 May 1788 & proved 6 October 1791 at King George County, Virginia. His year of birth is estimated by when his parents were married and his station in life when he died, being third in command of a ship.

Putnam was serving as Second Mate aboard the ship Amity when it's Master, Captain John Campbell, appeared before a Notary in the District of Norfolk to certify Putnam had fallen overboard at sea where it was "impossible to take him up again." He declared this had occurred about 2 A.M. on 12 November 1796. Putnam's brother John Stith presented this certificate of his brother's death to King George Court to be recorded 5 October 1797.

update: done (moved to century-appropriate parents)

Hi! I had posted awhile back to Robert Stith's page that I'd be moving the children of Robert Stith (who died 1791) to him & his wife, Mary Townsend Washington. Robert's 1788 will names sons Putnam & John and refers to his "daughters" (but not by name).

A genealogy on Stith-130 (Robert's brother John's profile) says he (Robert) had a daughter named Fanny Townsend.

The first Stith-Bolling connection is 1681.

Ann (Wray) Stith is mentioned in a 1727 deed.

The parents currently attached are from an earlier century. The only profile attached to Robert Stith-25 and Mary Townsend-203 who's theirs is John Stith-10.

See Stith-25 & also this G2G discussion.

The "new" parents will be Stith-360 & Washington-180.

Cheers, Liz
