Biography

Catherine is estimated to have born about 1768. She was the daughter of Drury Stith and his second wife Elizabeth Jones.

Catherine's mother Elizabeth Stith made her will in 1771. She bequeathed a stone ring to this daughter "Katherine" and requested she and her sister Charlotte be under the care of friend John Coleman. During a 1788 accounting of the estate of Col. Drury Stith, Catherine's father, it was recorded Capt. John Coleman had been paid in 1775 for maintaining and boarding "Katy" and Charlotte Stith. There were other line items in this accounting indicating Katherine was called Katy Stith, although she may have preferred Catherine in maturity.

The last found record for Catherine is when she was named in the 1789 will of her brother Edmund Stith. This record indicates she had not yet married, but he thought her of maturity to manage financial affairs.
I give unto my sister Catherine Stith all my lands & other Negroes and Stocks of all kinds and every other thing not mentioned, provided she pays my account with Mesr's Meade and Stiths and pays the legacy to John Stith. If she refuses, my desire is that the land be sold and Debts and---that Legacy paid and the overplus to return to her and her Heirs forever.

Note: Following the above bequeathed land and enslaved persons may lead to additional information regarding this daughter of Col. Drury Stith & Elizabeth Jones.

Research Notes

A. Catherine Stith married to John Limbrey Wilkins in 21 Oct 1790 in Brunswick County. She supposedly died in 1830 at the age of 69 so about 10 years TOO OLD to be this Catherine. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81645448/catherine-wilkins
