His father had been a musician and teacher and had previously travelled abroad (Bert had older siblings born in California and Ontario) but returned to Ireland before Bert was born. In the 1901 census William was described as a grocer. However he seems to have got "itchy feet" again not long afterwards.
In 1907 his entire family emigrated to Lanark, Ontario.[2]
Bert married another emigrant from Ireland, Molly Auld in 1920.[3] Their first son Herbert Dixon Stitt was born in 1921. He died on active duty in April 1945 and is buried at Goesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands.[4][5]
Mary Eleanor Isobel (Stitt) Hart 1926-1994 (married Thomas Hart)
Norman Edward Stitt 1928-1978
He seems to have worked in the railway industry and wrote a book about his experiences.[7]
Molly passed away in 1982, and Bert passed away in 1992 in Toronto.
They are buried together at York Cemetery in Toronto.[8]
