Biography

Matthew Stobart was born in 1835 in Warden, Northumberland, England to William Stobart and Sarah. He was christened on 9 Aug 1835 in Haydon Bridge, Northumberland.[1]

In 1841 Mat Stobart (age 6) lived at W Threep Wood in Warden with his father Willm (50), mother Sarah (50), and three siblings: John (20), Frances (15), and Sarah (14).[2]

In 1851 Matthew Stobart (age 15, Labourer) lived in the Chapelry of Haydon [his relationship to head of household is Son, so he lived with his family, but the household is not properly linked].[3]

Matthew Stobart married Hannah Gill in 1857. The marriage was registered in Hexham, Northumberland in the third quarter of the year.[4]

Matthew and Hannah had five sons:

  1. William Leonard Stobart (1857-1912)
  2. John Stobart (1859-)
  3. Matthew Stobart (1863-1948)
  4. Joseph Stobart (1865-1942)
  5. Thomas Stobart (1868-1868)

In 1861 Matthew Stobart (age 26, Road Maker) lived at Light Birks in Haydon with his wife Hannah (29) and two sons: [William] L (3) and John (1).[5]

In 1871 Matthew Stobart (age 35, Quarryman) lived in Haydon with his wife Hannah (38) and four sons: William Leonard (13, Agricultural Labourer), John (11, Scholar), Matthew (7, Scholar), and Joseph (5).[6]

In 1881 Matthew Stobart (age 45, Platelayer) lived in Haydon with his wife Hannah (49) and four sons: William (23, Stone Mason), John (21, Platelayer), Matthew (17, Reporter Printer), and Joseph (15, Labourer at Iron Works).[7]

Matthew Stobart passed away in 1884, aged 49 years. His death was registered in Hexham in the second quarter of the year.[8] Matthew Stobart of Haydon Bridge was buried on 10 Jun 1884.[9]
