Biography

Matthew Stobart was born in 1863 in Haydon Bridge, Northumberland, England to Matthew Stobart and Hannah (Gill) Stobart. His birth was registered in Hexham, Northumberland in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Gill.[1]

In 1871 Matthew Stobart (age 7, Scholar) lived in Haydon with his father Matthew (35, Quarryman), mother Hannah (38), and three brothers: William Leonard (13, Agricultural Labourer), John (11, Scholar), and Joseph (5).[2]

In 1881 Matthew Stobart (age 17, Reporter Printer) lived in Haydon with his father Matthew (45, Platelayer), mother Hannah (49), and three brothers: William (23, Stone Mason), John (21, Platelayer), and Joseph (15, Labourer at Iron Works).[3]

Matthew Stobart married Frances Smith Milburn in 1887. The marriage was registered in Haltwhistle, Northumberland in the third quarter of the year.[4]

In 1891 Matthew Stobart (age 37[27], Sub Editor Journalist) lived in Elswick, Northumberland with his wife Frances S (37[27]).[5]

In 1901 Matthew Stobart (age 37, Journalist) lived in Elswick with his wife Frances S (37) and servant Jane B Hutton (26).[6]

In 1911 Matthew Stobart (age 47, Journalist) lived in Ovingham, Northumberland with his wife Frances S (47) and servant Eleanor Smith (32).[7]

Matthew was the beneficiary of his brother William's estate in 1913: "STOBART William Leonard of 7 Crown-street Newcastle-upon-Tyne journalist died 12 December 1912 at Leadgate Allendale Northumberland Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 4 February [1913] to Matthew Stobart journalist. Effects £1945 18s. 8d."[8]

Matthew's wife passed away in 1930: "STOBART Frances Smith of 35 Osborne-terrace Gosforth Northumberland (wife of Matthew Stobart) died 4 January 1930 at Weston-super-Mare Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 24 January to the said Matthew Stobart retired journalist and John Bell solicitor. Effects £1503 14s. 9d."[9]

Matthew Stobart passed away on 29 Nov 1948, aged 86 years. His death was registered in Northumberland West in the last quarter of the year.[10]

"STOBART Matthew of Ashville Bardon Mill Northumberland died 29 November 1948 Probate Newcastle-upon-Tyne 31 January [1949] to Annie Stobart spinster, Thomas William Stobart local government official, and John Bell solicitor. Effects £27298 7s."[11]
