Biography
Edward was a Baptist minister. He first came to Canada in 1865, in charge of finding homes for 76 children from the Scottish National Orphan Home[1]. When his task was complete, he returned to Scotland and married Elizabeth Lindsay in 1866[2]. They would go on to have a total of 7 children, 4 born in Scotland and 3 in Canada. He was the first minister of the Kilmarnock Baptist Church, which was completed in September 1870[3]. He served there until he immigrated to Canada with his family in 1872. However, he continued to stay in touch with Scottish colleagues throughout his career in Canada[4].
By Nov 1872 Edward was ministering at Fonthill Baptist Church in Pelham, Welland County, Ontario[1]. It was here that Elizabeth Stobo, his fifth child and first child to be born in Canada, arrived. He then moved to Brampton, where he was the first pastor of the First Baptist Church from 1873-1876[1]. During this time he grew the congregation from 9 members to 76 members and motivated the construction of an impressive church building[5]. Jessie Stobo was born during this time period.
In 1876 he moved again to Chatham Baptist Church in Chatham, Kent, Ontario. Here William Stobo was born. He served there until Nov 1878, when he resigned, citing ill health[1]. This was followed by positions in Collingwood, Peterborough, Belleville, and finally Quebec City where he retired in 1884[1]. He served as President of the Quebec Evangelistic Alliance, vice president of the Dominion Alliance, and secretary of the Quebec Bible Society[1]. He passed away in 1918[6][7].
