He Built the foundations of Bank Foot Mills, Batley. on 26 Oct 1900.[19]
By the way, it is not generally known that the foundations of these mills [Bank Foot Mills] were laid by Mr George Love [sic] Stocker, who married Miss Ellen Sheard, niece of the late Mr Joseph Jubb, jnr, of Batley. Mr Stocker's orders to the mason was to "build a mill that will stand", and as the substantial walls were raised they were eyed with much pride by Mr Stocker, who, addressing Mr Jubb one day, said "Ain't I plucky, uncle, to build a mill?". In truth, he was more plucky than wise. Before the second floor was completed, Mr. Stocker's cash ran out, and Mr Jubb, in order that the money spent might not be wasted, completed the buildings which stand today, as Mr Wm Coates remarked on Monday night, like a castle. Mr Stocker is the father of Mr Harry Stocker, of Batley, and we are informed that he is a hairdresser in London at the present time.
