Biography
George Stockman is a presumed son of Johann Engleberth Stockman and Anna Maria, née Schmidt. The relationship was hypothesized by noted researcher Lee Stockman, who for many years published the Stockman Family Newsletter and hosted the national Stockman Family Reunion.
A "Barbara Stockman" is enumerated in the 1790 census in Newberry District, South Carolina, with three minor males and another female. This family does not fit any other son of Johann Engleberth and Anna Maria, who are related to all Stockman families in the area, so Barbara is believed to be the wife of a son who died before 1790, possibly named George. (The argument for his first name being George is given in an early edition of the Stockman Family Newsletter and needs to be cited here.)
Autosomal DNA tests have since revealed matches between descendants of Barbara Stockman and descendants of the other children of Johann and Anna; however, no segment triangulation between these groups has been reported yet, and given the endogamous nature of the Dutch Fork population at that time, it cannot be assumed that the presence of matches confirms that George Stockman existed and/or that Barbara Stockman was married to a son of Johann and Anna, as extremely likely as it seems to be. Barbara Stockman was possibly a Kinard by birth, giving her other strong links to the families of the area, including Stockman cousins/nieces/nephews.
