Biography
Sarah "Sallie" Stockman was born about 1819 in Alabama.[1] Although many extant documents, including Callahan family lore,[2] simply list her first name as "Sallie", there is an 1880 census record that appears highly probable to be her that records her first name as "Sarah".[3]
About 1836,[1] Sallie Stockman married Elias Callahan; this is estimated based on the birth year of her first child with Elias Callahan recorded in the 1850 federal census enumeration.
On 1 Jun 1850,[1] Sally Calahan (age 31) was living in Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Elias Calahan, with their children (listed in table below). Sallie could neither read nor write. It is unclear why her daughter, Elizabeth Callahan (born ~1842) was not recorded on the 1850 census; as Elizabeth Callahan does appear on the 1860 census.[4]

Sarah A Calahan | F | 8 | Alabama | |

On 1 Jun 1860,[4] Sallie Callahan (age 40) was living on the West Side Cahaba River, Bibb County, Alabama in the household of her husband, Elias Callahan, with their children (listed in table below). Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[4] the next family enumerated was that headed by Sallie's son-in-law, "Mirick Nolen" (age 22), with her daughter "Mary Nolen" (age 21).

1870 - see Research Notes below
On 1 Jun 1880,[3] Sarah Callahan (age 64) was living in Election Precinct 1 Kingdom, Bibb County, Alabama as the "widowed/divorced", head and sole member of her household. Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[3] the family immediately preceding was that headed by her son-in-law, Samuel Edmonds (the 2nd husband of her daughter, Mary Catherine (Callahan) Nolan Edmonds). [See Research Notes below regarding her marital status.]
Name | Sex | Race | Age | Status | Relation | Occupation | Birth Place |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sarah Callahan | F | White | 64 | Widowed/Divorced | Head | Keeping House | Alabama |
In 1880, Sallie Callahan's husband, Elias Callahan, lived in the household of their son-in-law, George Tillery, who was married to their daughter, Manerva Jane (Callahan) Tillery. [5] As such, at some time between 1860 and 1880, it appears that Sallie Callahan was no longer living with her husband, Elias Callahan.
On 8 Apr 1883, Sallie signed her mark and was witnessed to sign a sale of land by her and her husband, Elias Callahan, to Truman H. Aldrich. [6]
Her death date is not (yet) verified but appears to be in 1896. [7]
Research Notes
- 1870 - unable to identify an 1870 census enumeration for Sallie/Sarah Callahan. Hiestand-529 23:52, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- 1880 marital status - in the separate, 1880 federal census enumerations for Sarah Callahan and Elias Callahan, their marital statuses were each indicated as either widowed or divorced. However, they were both obviously living - though separately, and although divorce was possible in Alabama in 1880, it was not commonly utilized. As such, my interpretation of their marital status was what we would now term "separated" but not divorced.
In her son's, William T. Callahan, 1936 death record,[8] by the State of Alabama, his mother's name was recorded as "Elizabeth Stockman", rather than the "Sallie" or "Sarah" Stockman as she was more commonly referenced.
Who were Sallie Stockman's parents or siblings?
-- So far, this remains unclear. A clue is from the 1880 Census record for Sarah Callahan, where in it is stated that both her parents were from Alabama. [3] The prior census records did not ask for birth place of parents. However, if the 1880 census record was accurate (i.e., her parents actually were born in or from Alabama), then that would mean that her parents would have at least been living in Alabama before Sallie was born circa 1819; and hence before Alabama became a state. Prior to 1817, Alabama was part of the Mississippi Territory, which in turn was previously part of the Southwest Territory. So, this would imply that Sallie Stockman's parents were early immigrants to the Mississippi Territory (which later became Alabama).
-- Callahan Family Lore:[9] The following is from documents & letters collected by Erin J. (Callahan) Allen, which included a brief recollection circa 1920 by Mrs. Fannie (Nolen) Dunn
In the above, "G. Grandmother Stockman" was Fannie Nolen's great grandmother, and Sarah Stockman was Fannie's grandmother; John Stockman was Fannie's great uncle. Fannie was recollecting this about a century after the the birth of Sarah Stockman
--- She does not appear to be from the lineage of Johann Engelberth Stockman (b. 1725 - d. 1786), whose Stockman descendants immigrated to South Carolina, and then subsequent generations immigrated to Alabama. The timeframe of this Stockman ancestry is tantalizingly similar to what would be similar for Sallie Stockman, but there is no record of a female Stockman born at a similar time as Sallie Stockman (abt. 1819). A similar family was John G. Stockman who died in 1855 in Perry County, Alabama and whose estate was probated FamilySearch Probate records for John G. Stockman. However, the probate records have no mention of a Sarah/Sallie/Elizabeth Stockman/Callahan, though they do mention other Stockmans. Peter Hiestand 14:06, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
--- She does not appear to be an ancestor or related to Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" (Stockman) Hale (1868 - 1967). It was possible that she was named after Sallie (Stockman) Callahan, but her ancestry is not consistent with this hypothesis. Sarah Elizabeth Stockman < Dudley D. Stockman (1840 - 1920 < William Henry Stockman (1806 - 1897) < John George Stockman (b. 1783, S. Carolina - 1854). None of these male ancestors had a daughter that matches Sallie (Stockman) Callahan.
She is not the daughter of [William Henry Stockman] who was married to Elizabeth Watson. They had in 1832 a daughter named Sarah Emmeline Stockman, but she is significantly older than Sallie (Stockman) Callahan, and Sarah Emmeline is known to have married James William Talbert.
Although an intriguing possibility, she is not a daughter of Frederick Stockman (b. 1749, d. 1828).[10] This source includes references and excerpts from the Stockman Family Newsletter, and in particular, there is an entry that states that he was the father of Mary Sarah Stockman. "Stockman Family Newsletter 1986: 180 years ago in March 1806 Frederick Stockman & his wife Catherine DesBonnet moved their family to Texas & settled on the Trinity River at Villa Trinidad de Salcedo. Their family consisted of George, Henry, Peter, John & Margaret. At least 2 more children were born in Texas, Joseph Anthony & Mary Sarah."[11] Further, there is a reference that would place Frederick Stockman in or near Mobile, Alabama: "Per The Genealogicla & Historical Magazine of the South Vol IV #1, pg 62: Some Anglo-American Residents of Spanish Alabama, 1793: a list of persons indebted to the commercial trading house of Turnbull & Joyce of Mobile includes Frederick Stockman as well as a later list showing payment." However, Mary Sarah Stockman is known to have stayed in Texas, married (to Norris), and had many children; so she is not Sallie Stockman Callahan.
According to the Stockman Family Newsletter,[12] there were 2 "John George Stockmans" who were both living around the same time in Perry County, Alabama. One was born in 1787 and the other in 1783. One of these John Stockmans obtained a land patent, which is described in the newsletter as follows:
In 1830,[13]
George Stockman (age range 40 - 50) was living in Perry County, Alabama with the following persons in his household: a) Male - 1 (<5), 1 (5-10), 1 (40-50); b) Female - 1 (<5), 1 (5-10), 1 (10 - 15), 1 (30 - 40). If George Stockman was Sarah Stockman's father, then she might be the 1 female aged 10 - 15 (i.e., if her birthday was actually in 1819, then she would have been 11 years old in 1930). So, this is possible.Hiestand-529 05:22, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
