William Stockwell was born in 1874 in Lambeth, Surrey, England to William Stockwell and Harriet Ann (Malloy) Stockwell. His birth was registered in Lambeth in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Malloy.^[1]

In 1881 William Stockwell (age 6, Scholar) lived at 25 Bradwell St in Mile End Old Town, London with his father William (29, Baker), mother Harriet (32 [~35]), sister Alice (4), and brother Charles (2).^[2]

William's mother passed away in 1885, and his father married the widow Annie Warren (nee Metson) in 1886.

In 1891 William Stockwell (age 16, Van Boy) lived in Bethnal Green, London with his father William (38, Baker), stepmother Annie (41), and eleven siblings/step-siblings/half-siblings: Annie Warren (17, Ironer), Jane Warren (15, Tailoress), Alice Stockwell (14, Laundress), Charles Warren (13, Messenger), Charles Stockwell (12, Scholar), George Warren (11, Scholar), Harriett Stockwell (9, Scholar), Robert Warren (6, Scholar), Sidney Stockwell (3), James Stockwell (1), and John Stockwell (0).^[3]
