Biography
George Stoddard was the son of William Stoddard and his wife, Emma Cheeseman.[1]
He married Anne Herdson, daughter of Henry Herdson of London. [1] [2] They were parents of two sons, Richard and Nicholas, and a daughter, Judith. [1]
In 1502 William Stodard, of London, fishmonger, was a defendant in Common Pleas: Kent. William Stodard, clerk versus John Stodard, of Eltham, yeoman; Hugh Richardson, of Mottyngham, yeoman; John Poll, of St Pauls Cray, husbandman; William Stodard, of London, fishmonger, for trespass: breach of close at Mottyngham, Kent. [3]
William had died by 1538, when his widow, Emma, was a plaintiff in Common Pleas: 1538 Emma Stodard, widow, administratrix of William Stodard, of London, fishmonger. [4]
George had at least two brothers, Henry and Richard. In the will of Henry Stoddard, of London, fishmonger (PCC 1549), he mentions his brother George Stoddard, of London, grocer, his brother Richard Stoddard, and his mother Emma Stoddard. (The will has Thomas Stoddard in the margin and is indexed that way, but the testator twice refers to himself as Henrye Stoddarde.)[5]
George Stoddard is in the court of Common Pleas several times, for example in 1563 as George Stoddard, of London, grocer, [6] and in 1578 as George Stoddard, of London, merchant.[7]
He had died by 1580, when Anne Stoddard was the executrix of George Stoddard, grocer.[8]
Transcript of the Will of George Stodderd, Grocer of London 1580
What his Will makes clear is that two of his children had died by 28 May 1578 and were buried in St. Olave's, London, and his children Judith and Nicholas were born after 1559 (both under 21 in his Codicil of 1580). His brothers in law Thomas, Edward and John Herdson were appointed Overseers and his wife Anne or Anna executrix.[9]
