Biography

Betsey was born in Connecticut, a daughter of Philo Stoddard. [1] A family register appears to show her birth date as 20 August 1763, but other sources suggest that the year should be 1783, [2] including the Gravestone marker that has death 1872 with age 89.[3]

Betsey was the wife of "General" Jonas Clark, Jr.[3]

Betsy Stoddard and Jonas Clark were married in Middletown, Vermont, on 30 September 1798. The officiant was Enos Clark, Justice of the Peace.[4][5]

Betsy Clark died in Poultney, Vermont, on 18 December 1872. Her death was caused by paralysis. The death record states her age at death as 89 years, 10 months.[1] Her memorial stone in Miiddletown Springs Cemetery gives her age at death as 89 years.[3]

  5. In the article "Merritt Clark's Manuscript Genealogy," Jenks gave the year of marriage as 1799. This is probably a copying error.
  6. NEHGS transcribed Jonas Junior's birth year as 1771, but the image appears to show it as 1774. Betsy's birth year is transcribed as 1763, but the mage is not clear, and 1783 is consistent with other sources.

If Betsy Stoddard is daughter of Philo Stoddard, she could not be have been born in 1763. Philo was born in 1759, so he was only 4 years old in 1763. Birth in 1783 makes her a bit young to marry in 1798, but that marriage is plausible -- particularly if she was pregnant.
