Biography

Birth

John was born about 1801. He is mentioned in History of Alexander, Union, and Pulaski Counties as the husband of Mary Gwin and the father of ten children[1], and he is also mentioned as being predeceased in his father's will.

Residences

John was living at Union County, Illinois during the 1830[2] and 1840[3] censuses. John had a wife, six boys, and two girls during the 1840 census.

Marriage

  1. John married Mary Anderson 23 Dec 1824 at Union County, Illinois.[4]
  2. John married Mary Gwin about 1826 at Union County, Illinois.

John married Mary Gwin (date not recorded but assumed by the State records to be 1820).[5][6] Since the marriage date is not recorded, it is possible that the marriage date for Mary Gwin and John Stokes is about 1825 or 1826, which would be calculated by the birth date of their first child.

In History of Alexander, Union, and Pulaski Counties, Illinois, the author of that book states that John married Mary Gwin. John N. Stoke's will clearly states that all the children attributed to Mary Gwin (as stated in the above history book) were born to his son, John.

John and Mary Gwin's children:

  1. Jones
  2. Martha
  3. Alfred
  4. William
  5. Calvin
  6. James
  7. John B.
  8. Mary
  9. Elizabeth
  10. Preecly
