His origins are unknown [1]. There is speculation that his father was Robert Stokes of Prestwold [1]
He became Groom or "Master of the Horse" to Frances (Brandon) Grey the Duchess of Suffolk, who was the mother of Lady Jane Grey the "Nine Days Queen", and whose husband had been executed at the same time as his daughter in 1554. [1]. After a short time, they married. A daughter was born, but died in infancy, and Frances died on November 21 1559, leaving him her goods, a life interest in most of her land, and an acknowledged position in society. [1]
in 1559 and 1571 he was Member of Parliament for Leicestershire. There is no record of any major contribution from him in those Parliaments, but he was appointed to various committees in 1571.
In 1572 he married Anne the widow of Nicholas Throckmorton. She probably died in 1587.
He died on November 3 1585, and, per Royal Ancestry, was buried in the chapel at Beaumanor, Leicestershire. [1]
According to an earlier draft of this profile he was born on March 4 1519, but History of Parliament online gives his date of birth as c.1533. [1] This is unresolved. Kennedy-14080 10:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
