Thomas Stone was born about 1775, in Brunswick County, Virginia[1] to Jesse Stone, and Susannah (Suckey) Lightfoot.[2]
Thomas Stone's parents sold their property in Brunswick County, Virginia in 1789 and moved to Edgefield County, Ninety-Six District, South Carolina. Thomas' father, Jesse Stone appears in the 1790 Federal Census of Edgefield County, Ninety-Six District.
Thomas Stone married sometime before 1815, based on the year of birth of his oldest child, Aaron Stone. The name of Thomas' wife is currently unknown. (See Research Notes Below)
Thomas and his wife, (whose name is unknown) were the parents of nine children: Aaron Stone; David Stone; Sarah Stone Corley; Emily Stone; Thomas Stone; Abner Stone; Margaret L. Stone Bugg; Moses Stone; and Austin Stone.[3]
Thomas Stone is recorded as purchasing on 29 December 1830, a slave woman Phillis and child Nancy for $275 from the estate of David S. Mims. [4]
Thomas Stone was appointed in 1841 as the administrator of his uncle, Philip Lightfoot's, estate by the court in Edgefield County, South Carolina.[5]
Thomas Stone died in September 1842, in Edgefield County, South Carolina, and the court appointed Atticus Tucker as the administrator of his estate.[6]
NOTE: Extensive research has been done in the records of South Carolina for years, particularly in Edgefield and surrounding Districts in South Carolina and adjoining counties in Georgia to try and locate records to show the name of Thomas Stone's wife. Mr. Brent Holcomb, a professional genealogist, author, and publisher of the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, was hired by Carol Wilder in 2020 to do research in the records in South Carolina to locate the name of Thomas Stone's wife. Mr. Holcomb did extensive research in the records to no avail. Todate [1/12/2021] no records have been located that give the name of Thomas Stone's wife.
Incorrect Name of Thomas Stone's Wife: Martha "Patsey" Frazier Stone and variations of this name such as Patsey Frazier; Martha Patsey Crocker and Martha Crocker has been incorrectly listed in a large number of genealogies on Ancestry and other sites as the wife of Thomas Stone. None of these women are the wife of Thomas Stone. Martha "Patsey" Frazier Stone and the various variations of her name is not the wife of Thomas Stone, she is Thomas' sister. Thomas Stone's wife, whose name is unknown, died prior to 1840. No widow is listed as an heir of Thomas Stone in his estate records filed in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Martha, whose nick name was Patsey, is listed as Patsey Stone in the 1850 Federal census of Edgefield County, South Carolina, in the household of Thomas' son David Stone. It is likely individuals have assumed without doing any further genealogy research, that Patsey was David's mother, when she is in fact his Aunt. Martha Frazier Stone, never married and had no children. After the death of Martha's father, Jesse Stone, she lived with various family members. Martha gave a gift of deed to David Stone which reads in part: "to my nephew David Stone . . .". This deed of gift is filed in Edgefield County, South Carolina in Deed Book DDD, page 142. Also, Martha "Patsey" Frazier Stone was given a slave by her father, Jesse Stone. Jesse's Deed of Gift to his daughter Martha (Patsey) Frazier Stone is recorded in Edgefield County, South Carolina Deed Book BBB, 1839-1869, page 40. Martha, along with her brother, Thomas Stone, is listed as one of the ten (10) children of Jesse Stone, in Jesse's estate records filed in Edgefield County, South Carolina.
