Biography

This profile is part of the Stone Name Study.

Captain William Stone, Born: 1645, Richmond County, Virginia.[citation needed]

Married; Sarah Howard[citation needed] in 1661 in Pittsylvania, Virginia.[citation needed]

Death: 1707, Totuskey Creek, Richmond, Virgina, at age 62.[citation needed]

His wife Sarah died before 1 May 1717 when her Will was proved in Court in Richmond County, Virginia.[1][2]

Children

Their children, named in her Will, are:[1]

  1. Elizabeth, m. William Dawson
  2. Phillip
  3. William

Will

William Stone's will is recorded in Warsaw, Virginia January 31, 1707/8, in Folio F. 114V. Wills and Inventories 1699-1709: William Stone, Farn. Par. (Farnham Parish) will;

  • 7 Nov 1704, 31 Jan 1707/08 sons Philip, Joshua; s-i-l (son-in-law) Robert Scolfield; grsons. GREGORY and JOHN GLASCOCK; wife Sarah; daus. Elizabeth, Mary Fann; ex: wife; no wits (witnesses). The terms of the last will and Testament of William Stone caused his widow and executrix Sarah considerable concern and it appears it was only after considerable difficulty she succeeded in getting it admitted to record. There are many recordings in the North Farnham Parish Register in regard to the issue of William and Sarah Stone and their progeny.
  • 1704, Nov 4, North Farnham, Richmond Co., Virginia, Will of William Stone: Probated Jan 31 1707: Named sons Phillip and Joshua; son-in-law Robert Scholfield; grandsons Gregory and John Glascock; wife Sarah as exec; daughter Elizabeth and Mary Fann; no witnesses listed.
  • 1705, Sept 5, Order Bk. 4: William Stone (Jr.) and Elizabeth Stone, two of the children of William Stone, deceased, vs. Sarah, executrix of the said deceased.
  • 1705 - William Stone & Elizabeth Stone, two of the children of WILLIAM STONE, deceased, vs SARAH, executrix of said deceased. 6 Aug. 1706 - Deed of Philip Stone (& Sarah his wife) as heir to his father, WILLIAM STONE, deceased. 31 Jan. 1707 - STONE, WILLIAM, Recorded 31 Jan 1707. Sons Philip, Joshua, son-in-law Robert Schofield, grandson John Glasscock; wife SARAH STONE; daughter Elizabeth Stone; daughter MARY FANN. 10 June 1707 - Deed of gift from Francis Stone to Sarah and Katherine Key, daughters of his wife, Mary Stone, by her former husband, James Key. 02 July 1711 - Will, STONE, SARAH (X) 02 July 1711-01 May 1717. Daughter Elizabeth Dawson; son William.

Property

  1. On April 3, 1680, while a resident of Gloucester County, William Stone purchased 727 acres of land in Rappahannock County from Robert Bedwell; this property fell into Richmond County upon its formation in 1692. William Stone and his wife Sarah Stone seated this plantation on Totusky Creek in North Farnham Parish and their progeny continued in the present Richmond County area for several generations. William Stone also acquired land in Essex County from Richard Gregory, but he disposed of it in 1699.
  2. Land purchase deeds are recorded in Essex County Court House in Tappahannock, Virginia, for William Stone (where Old Rappahannock County records are kept.) [3][4]
  3. In "old" Rappahannock another group of Stones are found. October 20, 1672, William Stone bought of Giles Cale 200 acres of land. This is the earliest record of him in this country. Later he purchased various other tracts of land, until he owned over one thousand acres. His will is dated 1704. He left a wife Sarah and five living children; one daughter had died earlier. He died about 1710-11 as appears from the court records. The widow lived about twenty years after William Stone's death.[4]
  4. William and Sarah Stone's homestead on Totuskey Creek was close to the Lancaster County line and not far from North Farnham Church. When the North Farnham parish register opens (1663-1814), there was no such parish. It was simply Farnham Parish and covered both sides of the Rappahannock River in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. In 1684 Farnham Parish was subdivided into North Farnham Parish with the Rappahannock River as the natural boundary. Then in 1692 Old Rappahannock County was abolished and became the parent of two new counties. South Farnham Parish fell into Essex County and North Farnham Parish fell into Richmond County.

Research Notes

Place Creation

  • Lancaster County was established on 1651 from York County and Northumberland County.
  • Old Rappahannock County was established on 1656 from Lancaster County.
  • Richmond County was established on 26 Apr 1692 from Old Rappahannock County.

Vital Statistics

Birth
A birth in Richmond County, British Colony of Virginia, in 1645 was previously listed. Richmond County was not created until 1692. Perhaps the birth should be Northumberland County based on the apparent duplicate profile William Stone (abt.1645-aft.1707).

Disputed Spouse

Many trees have William's wife Sarah as Sarah Howard, some with her being the daughter of Francis Howard and some the daughter of Matthew Howard. I have totally eliminated Francis as her father since he was only 6 years old at the time of her birth and cannot find credible documentation that supports Matthew as her father.

Also, note that Howard may not even be her maiden name, this is only speculation based on may merged family trees with no credible sources for her maiden name.

It has also been speculated that her maiden name could be Lewis since the Lewis family was close to the Stone family and lived in the same area.

Anyone with credible sources regarding Sarah Stone's background and heritage, please feel free to contribute and share.

General Notes

William Stone (1645-1704) and some of his progeny resided in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, for several generations and there is considerable record of them there. His contemporary, Francis Stone (1650-1716), resided in the area which became King George County in 1721.

Old family traditions declare that the Stones of Virginia lived in great wealth for the times and were persons of large influence.

Additional pre-merge note: The parents to whom the present William Stone is attached are unproven. Both parents have specious narratives that are incomplete. The mother's narrative does name children, but William Stone is not among them.

This would be a clean cut to detach him as a son, since nothing cites the parents that are attached, and no proofs are noted or mentioned, at all about his origin story.

There is a PDF of an unnamed source that doesn't appear to name Sarah as William Stone's wife, either (attached to Sarah's profile) but does also appear to name a William Stone's wife as Virginia Howard. I have asked the poster to clarify which page is considered pertinent as it may not be a valid/applicable source, and it doesn't really seem to lead anywhere.

I've just cleaned up the duplicate William Stone who is also married to Sarah. Many of the citations are similar.

Please let me know, once the merge request comes through, if I can do anything else.

I did want to point out that the Headley (1983) volume has William Stone's abstract showing:

  • 7 Nov 1704 Farnham Parish will
  • 31 Jan 1707/8 probate
  • Wife: Sarah
  • Children:
  1. Phillip Stone
  2. Joshua Stone
  3. Elizabeth Stone
  4. Mary (Stone) Fann
  • Son in law: Robert Scolfield
  • Grandsons
  1. Gregory Glascock
  2. John Glascock

Stone-12167 and Stone-1182 are not ready to be merged because: These profiles are both clearly based at least in part on the same 31 Jan 1707 will and so are either conflated or duplicates. Need to resolve the different parents & LNAB of spouse Sarah

William Stone-12167 and William Stone-1182 are obvious duplicates, but they have different parents that need to be resolved before their profiles can be merged.

Although I don't believe this is my Stone group, I have been studying these Stones for a possible connection to mine. I couldn't help but notice you have a marriage in 1661 in Pittsylvania County. This doesn't seem accurate to me as Pittsylvania County and its surrounding area was not settled until much later. Pittsylvania is located well west of the fall line in Virginia (the fall line considered the frontier in the late 1600s).

Please note: None of the William Stone's on WikiTree are a match for this William Stone. Please do not mix him up with William Franklin Stone son of John Stone and Mary Nelson. There were 13 William Stone's living in this time period it is assumed some of them were related. It is assumed that both William's mentioned were cousins.

With such a common name it makes it harder to keep family tree's form getting mixed up and they are on Ancestory. com and Geni, do not use these as sources Please. Thank you,

Hi Cheryl,

It's been a while since this comment was posted.

What are the proofs that align a William "Franklin" Stone with John and Mary (Nelson) Stone? Right now, the narrative on their William's profile makes no mention of Franklin as a middle name (which would be a rare thing to have in the 17th century, anyway) and his profile (as well as marriage to Sarah (Unknown) Stone) gives him a duplicate status (pending, because "different parents").

Furthermore, FamilySearch shows John and Mary (Nelson) Stone as the parents of the William who married Sarah (Unknown - traditionally Howard) Nelson, but no proofs attach the two generations. As an aside, however, some confusion rests on FamilySearch in the "proofs" about their children that have been accepted: it is stated on FamilySearch unequivocally "Only proven children are William, Ashwell, Elizabeth & Mary per Historical Southern Families, Volume VI." but I haven't been able to reproduce, and working from the available wills of William and Sarah (again, not knowing or having any proof on either's parents), the children attached to the present William seem solid. (FamilySearch, not so much.)

The rub is that we have the exact same first generation information (profile) on the other Willaim...

Notably, for the present profile: no proofs align him with the attached parents: neither here, nor on either of the parental profiles.

I'm hoping that we can get this sorted, and I'm here to help all that I can.

Kind regards,

Porter

Re:Rejected match - William Franklin Stone [compare] [match] [remove] (Stone-4399) Nov 3, 2013

There is no common data between these two profiles at all.

Do not change the rejected status unless new verifiable data is added which links the two.

Do not change data to match without actual evidence.

Some merges are being forestalled on the Stone lines until there is a complete review made by the US Southern Colonies Project leaders.
I just don't understand why these matches are getting rejected. If the parents are wrong, or the data is wrong, then that needs to be fixed, or templated as UnverifiedParents and status Uncertain. But we can't have two separate sets of profiles floating around that clearly seems to represent the same person.

If this represents someone else than the matches as children of Colonel John Stone, then they need to be disambiguated, not just rejected, disconnected and forgotten.

posted by Steven Mix
Removed John Stone and Mary Nelson as parents since there is conflicting data and most sources state that the parentage of William Stone is unknown. If sources do verify parentage, then will restore parents with correct information.
