Ezena Stone[1] was born 7 Jan 1795 in Bedford County, Virginia, the daughter of Admire Hurt Stone and Susanna Gilpin. Sometime before 1826, Ezena appears to have moved to Kentucky, where in Adair County she married Andrew Smith. By 1824, the family had moved with their first four children to Gibson County, Indiana, where their remaining children were born.
Ezena died 30 Apr 1857 at age 62 and is buried with her husband at Andrew Smith Cemetery, Owensville, Gibson County, Indiana.[2]
Research Notes
↑ "Ezena" is the name as found on her headstone and in the her original marriage record, but several variations on the name appear both in documents and reports. In tree marriage compilations, it appears three ways: as "Ezna", "Ezema" and "Essener". Turman himself (1883, p. 322) calls her "Ezenith", without citing a source, though he also mentions "Ezena" as the name on their marriage record; "Asenath" as found in "Smith family records"; "Ezina" on the 1850 census (Turman's mistake: the name on the 1850 census is actually written "Ezine"); and "Elena" on her headstone (another mistake: the name on the headstone is clearly written "Ezena").
↑ Turman (1883, p. 322) mistakenly claims that Ezena and Andrew were buried at the David Smith ("Bethel") Cemetery, but in fact their headstones are found at the Andrew Smith Cemetery.
