Biography

NOTE: This individual represents Generation Two of the published book "THE STONE FAMILY OF VIRGINIA, NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, KENTUCKY, AND BEYOND. (DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS STONE OF HAMILTON PARISH, VIRGINIA) " by Jack E. MacDonald. Reference numbers at the end of each sentence match up with numbered references under Sources.

Thomas Stone, the eldest son of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish, Virginia is believed to have been born in about 1721/1722 in Stafford County, Virginia. 1 This Thomas Stone was later married on 7 April 1741 in Prince William County, Virginia to a woman named Mary Butler. 1,2,3 Verification that Thomas Stone was married to Mary Butler was found in Sheriff John Crump’s Account Book for Hamilton Parish in Prince William County, Virginia for the period 1751-1755. 2 Mary, who is believed to have been born in about 1720/1721 in Richmond County, Virginia, was the daughter of Joshua Butler and Grace Page. 1,3

After their marriage, Thomas and Mary resided in that portion of Prince William County that was later formed into Fauquier County, Virginia in 1759. 4 Although many Fauquier County records have been lost or destroyed, a number of tax lists were found among some unrecorded “loose papers” in the basement of the Fauquier County Courthouse in 1996. 5 These tax lists were later published by the late John P. Alcock in 2001. 5 In column one of page two of the 1778 List of Tithes taken by William Pickett for the Lower District of Leeds Parish, Thomas Stone, referred to as Thomas Stone, Sr. on the list, and his youngest son, James Stone, were residing on the same farm, while Thomas Stone, Jr. and Spencer Stone were residing on adjoining lands. 5 Thomas Stone, Sr.’s son, Benjamin Stone, was listed in column two of page two, indicating that he was probably living some distance away. 5

Although Mary (Butler) Stone appears to have died prior to Thomas, the actual date of her death is not known. She is believed, however, to have died in Fauquier County, Virginia. Thomas Stone, on the other hand, is believed to have died in Fauquier County in 1788. 1 The children listed below have been determined through various deed, tax, court, and misc. documents to be those of Thomas and Mary (Butler) Stone.

Stone-397 and Stone-12076 appear to represent the same person because: Thomas Stone-397 is the original profile for Thomas Stone who married Mary Butler. Please merge Stone-12076 into Stone-397 so that we only have one profile for Thomas Stone. For you see Thomas Stone is my 5th Great Grandfather. Thank you, Cheryl Stone Caudill

Stone-12076 and Stone-397 do not represent the same person because: Being a Stone researcher I can say the Thomas was a very common name for this time and that these are 2 different people.

Hey Cheryl and Cathy, I left this note on Pic's profile regarding his message...

I noticed the message you left on the Profile for Thomas Stone. It's a good message except that it would be good to provide a source to establish your view on this. It would also give the profile managers an opportunity to review the facts as you present them and make a intelligent decision.

Thanks,

Mags

The Thomas Stone of northern Virginia, husband of Mary Butler, cannot be the son of the Thomas Stone and Kate Broughton of Maryland, as the latter's son "Thomas" married someone else and lived in a different place, with different children. Many people have repeated this same claim connecting the Thomas Stone of Stafford to the famous Stones of Maryland, but it can't be, unless the Thomas Stone of MD had an illegitimate son he named after himself and sent to N. VA., but that seems implausible.
