Biography

John Harless Stone was born the 8th of October 1870 in Shelby county, Alabama. John was the son of Thomas Stone and Frances L. Fowler.

John, age 8, appears in the 1880 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama in the household of his father, Thomas Stone.[1]

John married Lula Frances Hattaway on the 15th of January 1896 in Shelby county, Alabama.[2]

John appears in the 1900 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. John's household appears as follows: John age 27, born Oct. 1873, occupation, farmer; Lula F., age 27, born June 1873; mother of 3 children with 2 children living; Lanis E. age 2, born Dec. 1897; and Charles A. age 1, born Mar. 1899.[3]

John appears in the 1910 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. John's household appears as follows: John H. age 36; Lula F. age 36, listed as mother of 8 children with 6 children living; Elven age 13; Harles F. age 11; Leonard M. age 7; Noah A. age 5; Bufford R. age 3; and Linnie M. age 1.[4]

John appears in the 1920 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. John's household appears as follows: John J. age 47; Lula F. age 46; Leonard age 16; Noah age 15; Roy age 13; Lennie age 10; Gordy age 8; and Odis age 5.[5]

John appears in the 1930 Federal census in Shelby county, Alabama. John's household appears as follows: John age 58; Lula age 56; Linnie age 21; and Otis age 15.[6]

John died the 20th of September 1936. John was buried in the Fourmile Baptist Church Cemetery, Shelby county, Alabama.[7]

John's obituary appeared in the Shelby County Reporter as follows: "Former Resident Dies In Sylacauga Sept. 20th - Mr. John H. Stone died Sunday September 20, 1936 about 10:30 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Stone, and eight children, one daughter, Mrs. J.R. Hinton of Siluria; seven sons, Elvin Stone, Harpersville, Roy Stone, Siluria, Harless, Lenard, Bill, Gordon and Otis Stone of Sylacauga; and 14 grand children. Mr. Stone was born and raised in Shelby county, but had been a citizen of Sylacauga for the past six years. he was 65 years old at the time of his death and was a loyal and devoted christian of the Baptist church since early manhood. He was loved by all who knew him and he left a host of loyal friends everywhere. Interment was made in Fourmile cemetery, Tuesday, September 22, at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Haddock of Calera conducting the funeral service."[8]
