Biography

The Reverend William Stone, a Protestant Minister, was born in Kilkenny Ireland, about 1785.

He entered Trinity College Dublin on 5th July 1802; his college record showing he was 17 years old, , from Kilkenny County, that his father was George a “Clericus”, that he was a scholar in 1805 and graduated with a B.A. AEst. in 1809.

Reverend Stone died on August 20th 1870 at Springfield, near Berrima, the home of his daughter, Mrs Smith. His obituary from the Sydney Morning Herald says that he “laboured hard for many years as the Curate of Castlecomer, in the County of Kilkenny in Ireland.” He married Susan Pitt Johnson about 1813, presumably in Ireland; and they had 9 children, all probably born in Kilkenny.

The Reverend and his wife emigrated to Australia with all of their children except the eldest, George Luther Stone, who like his father, had studied at Trinity College, graduating in 1838. The family sailed from Plymouth on the 11th October 1840, on board the "Marquis of Hastings", a London based barque, arriving in Sydney on the 4th February 1841. The two eldest daughters, Susan Stone and Alicia Stone were housed with the other single women for the voyage with the rest of the family accommodated in the Intermediate Cabin. The Surgeon Superintendent’s Report of this voyage states that Divine Service was held on board the ship “as often as weather permitted by the Reverend Wm Stone on deck or myself between decks”. (The Surgeon also reported that the Captain, T.A. Carr’s “conduct to me personally was grossly insulting but not such as to do any serious injury to the emigrants.”)

Reverend Stone’s obituary shows that on arrival in New South Wales he was “appointed by the late Bishop Broughton to All Saints, Sutton Forest”. His wife died in 1854 and he remained in this part of NSW until his death in 1870.
