Nehe was born about 1868. He is the son of William Stoneman and Elizabeth Reed.[1]
His naval record describes Nehemiah as 5 foot 8 inches tall, with dark hair, and hazel eyes. He’s described as having a number of tattoos: on his left forearm “Britannia”; on his right forearm a ballet girl; and in his right hand locked hands over heart with M + S over it.
Nehemiah was employed in the trade of Stoker on a number of vessels - beginning on the Indus in Feb. 1888 and finishing aboard the HMS Aurora (1887) in March of 1895.
He then was in Northern Ireland it would seem doing coast guard work, serving in a number of locations, including: Limerick, Lough Swilly, Greystones, and finally Western Cawsand in Cornwall.
He received a naval pension in 1910/1911 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve (R.F.R.) Devonport on Oct. 1911. But he was never called back into service, as in Sept. 1914 he was considered medically unfit to serve in World War I.
Nehemiah was awarded the Testimonial on Vellum by the Royal Humane Society for saving a life at Greystones on Oct. 26, 1907.
He is remembered in his obituary as a naval pensioner, and a prominent member of the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe Lodge, R.O.A.B. of which he was S.P.[2]
