  • Francis H. Stoner one of Jay county's well know retired farmers and a substantial landowner, living at his pleasant farm home in Madison township, rural mail route No. 6 out of Portland, is a "Buckeye" by birth, as are so many of the older citizens of Jay county, but has been a resident of this county since the days of his early childhood. Mr. Stoner was born in Preble county, Ohio, November 2, 1846, and is the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Loy) Stoner, both of whom were born in that same state, the latter in Montgomery county, a daughter of Peter and Catherine (Temple) Loy, natives of Maryland, who had become residents of the Middletown neighborhood in Ohio...As will be noted by a comparison of dates, Francis H. Stoner was but a "toddler" when his parents came to this county in 1849 and he grew up in the log cabin home in section 17 of Madison township. On January 2, 1870, Francis H. Stoner was united in marriage to Matilda Bibler, who was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, but who was reared in Jay county, she having been but a child when her parents, Jacob and Anna (Freck / Frick) Bibler, came to this county and settled on a farm in Madison township. To this union nine children have been born, all of whom are living save John W., who died at the age of twenty- three years, and one who died in infancy, the others being, William E.; Francis A.; Clarence M.; Marion O.; Arley I.; Henry G. and Cora Anna Elizabeth Stoner, the latter of whom born on September 16, 1888, married September 26, 1908 Samuel Hays Whitacre, who was born in Darke county, Ohio, March 30, 1879, and has four children, Flossie Naomi, born on November 10, 1901; Dorothy Irene, August 7, 1911; William Wilmore, June 21. 1914 and Ralph Dewayne Whitacre, July 29, 1921.
