Biography

Harriet Porcher Stoney was the daughter of Samuel Gaillard Stoney and Louisa Cheves Smythe. In 1917 she married Albert Simons. They had four children. Active in Charleston civic affairs, she formed a committee in 1932 to help the unemployed and was instrumental in getting a birth control clinic started.

She was the Founder of the League of Women Voters in South Carolina and served as its first President from 1951 to 1955. The Charleston News and Courier headlined the news of her election "WITHOUT A SUPERIOR," and went on to say: "Harriet Simons is as well informed about national, state, and municipal affairs as is any person now holding public office in South Carolina and is at least as reliable and capable as any one of them is."
