He was the son of Major James Richard Neville Stopford, 7th Earl of Courtown and Cicely Mary Birch. He was born on 24 November 1908. He married, firstly, Christina Margaret Cameron, daughter of Admiral John Ewen Cameron and Marion Gertrude Granger, on 1 August 1934. He and Christina Margaret Cameron were divorced in 1946.3 He married, secondly, Patricia Winthrop, daughter of Harry Stephen Winthrop, on 23 February 1951.1 He died on 23 July 1975 at age 66.
He succeeded to the title of 8th Earl of Courtown, co. Wexford [I., 1762] on 25 January 1957.1 He succeeded to the title of 8th Viscount Stopford [I., 1762] on 25 January 1957.1 He succeeded to the title of 7th Baron Saltersford, of Saltersford, co. Chester [G.B., 1796] on 25 January 1957.1 He succeeded to the title of 8th Baron Courtown, co. Wexford [I., 1758] on 25 January 1957.1
