Biography

Church of Ireland Clergy

Edward was the son of Rev James Stopford and Anne Wray.

He entered Trinity College Dublin on 21 November 1789. B.A. 1794, M.A. 1799, LL.B and LL.D 1821. [1]

He was collated as Prebendary of Donoghmore (Ross) on 22 November 1804 ; installed same day. He resigned on 25 August 1805. In 1808 he was Rector of Killybegs, in the diocese of Raphoe; in 1817 he was appointed Vicar-General of Raphoe ; in 1823 he became Rector of Derrynoose in the diocese of Armagh.

He was collated on 16 February 1825 as Archdeacon of Armagh (FF.) ;

On 6 November 1842 he was consecrated Bishop of Meath at Armagh, by the Primate, assisted by the Bishops of Kilmore and Down.

When he arrived at Ardbraccan in 1842 he found himself faced with the need for major repairs to the house and outbuildings while much of the Deer Park wall was in ruins. [2]

Edward married Catherine Reddish Browne in 1802. [3]

yesterday in the parish church of Rincurran by the Rev Edward Herbert Kenny, the Rev Edward Stopford of the Cathedral of Cork, to Miss Catherine Reddish Browne, youngest dau of the Rev Thomas Adderley Browne late of Kinsale.

He died at Ardbraccan House, co Meath in 1850.

Obituary

Most Rev Edward Stopford, LL.D. Lord Bishop of Meach, a Privy Councillor for Ireland died 17 Sep at Ardbraccan House, co Meath. Dr Stopford was the son of the Rev Mr Stopford, for many years Rector of Glanmore, co Cork and grandson of Dr James Stopford, Lord Bishop of Cloyne. [4]
