Alfred was born in 1879[1] in Newport, Yorkshire, England. In 1881 he lived with his parents, John and Mary, at Turners Cottages, Wallingfen, Yorkshire.[2]
In 1891 Alfred worked as a general servant to the Holt family in Hotham, Yorkshire.[3] At the time of the 1901 census, he worked as a railway signalman and boarded with the Oates family in Upton, Yorkshire.[4]
He married Miriam Hunter in Newport in 1904[5][6] and in 1911 the family lived in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[7]
