Biography

Frederick Storm (also found as Storms) was born about 1763 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was one of seven children born to John and Elizabeth Storm, natives of Germany.

Jacob Shoemaker married Dorothy Storms near Stroudsburg, Pa about 1786. Dorothy’s brothers and sisters were: Andrew, John, Margaret, Catharine who married Geo. Rhodes, Betsy who married Andrew Myers, Frederick who married Olive Patridge and moved to Lansing and lived on a farm adjoining the Rhodes’ farm. [1]

Accounts say Frederick Storm, along with his brother-in-law, George Rhodes, moved their families to Milton, Cayuga County, New York, in the area now known as Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. Although there are different accounts of when they arrived in Lansing, it’s believed they arrived about 1796. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

At that time there were few roads that had been laid out and most of the journey was through the woods and made in an old lumber wagon drawn by an ox team. [8]

The two men settled on adjoining farms on lot #72 of the Military Tract in Milton. Here, in the native forest, they cleared the land and built their log homes. [9]

Frederick and Olive had two sons: John who had a son Frederick a resident of Ludlowville, NY, and Abel Storm who died unmarried. [10] According to Olive’s will, they also had at least five daughters: [11] Elizabeth “Betsey” Storm born in 1802 and died in 1859 [12] ; Millie Storms born in 1807and died in 1829 [13] ; Mary “Polly” Storm born in 1809, married James Dunn and died in 1892. [14] ; Eunice Storm, born March 2, 1812 in Lansing, married Watson G. Thomas and died July 3, 1853 in Buffalo, NY. [15] ; Julia A. Storm, born in 1815, married William B. Smith and died April 14, 1873 in Elmira, NY. [16]

Frederick Storm died April 7, 1817. He is buried in Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. [17] [18]

In the Tompkins County Dower Books, copied by Jean Worden, Book I reads as follows:
