Biography

This profile is part of the Storrs Name Study.

Royal Storrs was born on 1 April 1765 in Mansfield, Windham, Connecticut Colony, son of Maj. Joseph Storrs (1712–1785) and Experience (Gurley) Storrs (1725–1767).[1]

His siblings were:

Royal and Sarah Pierce were married in 1786 in Connecticut. Sarah was the daughter of Seth Pierce and Bethiah (Field) Pierce.[2]

They had the following children:

  3. Experience (1790-1793)[5]
  4. Royal Storrs (1793–1861)
  5. Ashbel Augustus (1796-1854)[6]
  6. Experience (1798-1836)[7]

  8. Otis (1803-1835)[9]

Sarah died in 1815,[10] and Royal married Clarissa Brigham on 9 May 1816. Clarissa was the daughter of Stephen Brigham and Hannah (Field) Brigham.[11]

They had the following children:

  1. Elisabeth (Storrs) Freeman (1817–1893)
  2. Clarissa (1819-1837)[12]
  3. Caroline (1822-1905)[13]

Royal died on 22 June 1840, aged 75. He was buried in Old Storrs Cemetery, Storrs, Tolland County, Connecticut.[1][14]

His will, dated 11 December 1839, left his large Bible and bureau to his wife Clarissa, all of his clothing to be split between Royal and Ashbel, and a dollar each to his daughters Sarah Barrows and Elisabeth Freeman. The real estate and residual personal estate were to be divided into quarters, one part each going to his wife and to his three daughters: Lucinda, Olive, and Caroline. He appointed his son Royal to be executor.[15]
