Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Jesse Storey (or Story) was born on 12 Mar 1730, at Ipswich in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of Deacon Zacharias Storey and Rachel Andrews of the Chebacco Parish Church community.[1]

Jesse married Ruhamah Burnam on 13 Dec 1753, in Ipswich.[2] After their marriage, they lived in Chebacco Parish in Ipswich, where they had at least eight children, most baptized at the Chebacco Parish Church in Ipswich:

Military Service: The American Revolution

1776 Project
Private Jesse Story Sr served with Essex County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Jesse was 45 years old when he and his son, Jesse Story, Jr., both served as privates in Captain Jonathan Cogswell, Jr.'s company of the Ipswich town militia, which marched out of Chebacco Parish in Ipswich in response to the Alarm of April 19, 1775, sounded when British troops left Boston en route to Lexington and Concord. It is doubtful that this unit could have reached the vicinity of Boston in time to take part in that running battle, but both father and son were credited for three days of service.[9] Jesse, Sr. returned to Ipswich, but Jesse, Jr. stayed behind to fight and die at the Battle of Bunker Hill on 17 Jun 1775.[10]

The next year, Jesse Story, Sr. served again as a private, this time in company with his next-oldest teenage son, Parker, in the company commanded by Captain Daniel Giddings, in Colonel Joseph Foster's regiment, from 29 Jan 1776, until his discharge on 18 Nov 1776 (9 months, 21 days). He and Parker were stationed at Gloucester, near Ipswich, as part of the coastal defense effort.[11]

He responded to another Alarm on 30 Apr 1778, and served again as a private in the Ipswich contingent of the militia, this time for over 3 months, in Capt. David Low's company under Col. Jonathan Cogswell.[12]

After the War

In between his periods of service with the militia during the war and after the war had ended, Jesse continued to work his farm in Ipswich. The 1790 census for Ipswich shows Jesse Story's household as including three white males over the age of 16 and two white females over the age of 16.[13]

Ruhamah (Burnam) Story died in Ipswich on 10 Feb 1798, at the age of 62 years.[14]

Jesse and Eunice Burnham (also of Ipswich) recorded their intention to marry in Ipswich on 19 Oct 1799.[15] They were married in Ipswich on 19 Nov 1799, by Rev. Josiah Webster.[16]

In 1800, Jesse and Eunice appeared in the census for Ipswich, together with a boy and girl, both under ten years old.[17] Ten years later, in the 1810 census, there was only a boy between the ages of 10 and 16.[18] After Chebacco Parish formally separated from the town of Ipswich and incorporated as the new town of Essex, Jesse and Eunice continued to live there, now with a young man between the ages of 15 and 25.[19]

Eunice (Burnham) Story died on 28 Nov 1821, in Essex, of a "liver complaint," when she was about 77 years old. The collected vital records provide two ages for Eunice: 72 (from the church records) and 77. The discrepancy may result from the church calculating her age on the basis of her baptism, rather than her birth.[20] It could also result from a misreading of someone's handwriting,

In her Last Will and Testament, dated 7 Jan 1819, Eunice's principle heirs were her sister, Margaret Burnham, wife of Joseph Burnham, and her niece, Lois Burnham. Also mentioned were Sarah Burnham, daughter of Joseph Burnham; Peggy Goodhue, wife of Joseph Goodhue; and Eunice Burnham, daughter of Winthrop Burnham. She appointed Capt. Jonathan Story to be her executor.[21] She did not mention her husband, Jesse Story, in this document.

Death

Jesse Story, Sr. died on 26 May, 1824, at the age of 94,[22] in Chebacco Parish, which had incorporated on 5 Feb 1819, as the town of Essex. He had lived to see the colonies win independence from Britain to become the United States. He had also seen his home of Chebacco Parish win its independence from Ipswich to become the town of Essex.[23]

Research Notes

The Identity of Eunice Burnham:

Based on the information given at the time of her death, Eunice Burnham would have been born between about 1744 and about 1749 and would have been in her early 50s at the time she married Jesse. The collected vital records provide two ages for Eunice: 72 (from the church records) and 77.[24] The discrepancy may result from the church calculating her age on the basis of her baptism, rather than her birth. It could also, of course, have resulted from a misreading of someone's handwriting by a transcriber,
There was one child, Eunice "Burnum," baptized on 30 Apr 1749, at the Chebacco Parish Church in Ipswich, daughter of Jacob Burnum and Sarah Cogswell,[25] who might be Jesse's second wife. She may have been the Eunice Burnam who married Joshua Burnham on 16 Sep 1762,[26] which would mean she was probably five years old at the time of her baptism and born in about 1744. This would agree with the age (in her 78th year, or 77 years old) of Eunice (Burnham) Story at the time of her death in 1821. Both Pratt and Storey agree with this hypothesis.[27]
Joshua Burnam, Eunice (Burnham) Story's possible first husband, may have been the son of Jeremiah and Jane Burnam, baptized at the Chebacco Parish Church on 28 Nov 1736.[28] There was also a Capt. Joshua Burnham who died "in his 55th year" on 9 Jun 1791, when he "lately arrived sick from the West Indies."[29] Capt. Burnham, the son of Jeremiah and Jane, would have turned 55 in November of 1791, so this would match. It would also mean that Eunice had been a widow for over eight years at the time of her remarriage.
