Biography

Mary 'Mollie' Eleanor Stotts, daughter of William Stotts and Mary Patterson, was born in Illinois in 1834.

16-year-old Mollie is with her family in Keokuk, Iowa, in 1950. ^[1]

She married Orion Clemens in 1854 in Lee County, Iowa. ^[2]

Mollie and Orion made their way to Nevada where he served as territory secretary for Nevada - second in command to the Governor (appointed by President Lincoln). Orion had moved to Iowa at the very end of 1853, he became active in anti-slavery politics, leading him ultimately to working for Lincoln's election in 1860. Orion served 1861 - 1865.

Orion Clemens was defeated in his attempts to be nominated as a candidate for Secretary of State in 1864, the year their daughter, Jennie, died. He and his wife, Mollie, moved from Carson City about one-and-a-half years later, never to return.
