Biography

Mary Ann Stout was born at Parramatta in 1845, to English immigrants John Stout and his wife Bridget Wright. John worked as a carpenter and joiner until the day he died at age 71.

In about 1863, Mary Ann moved north with her brother William Stout to Ulmarra on the Clarence River. She was nearly 20. About a year later, Mary Ann married Thomas Grainger, another Clarence River settler who was born in the Parramatta region.

Mary Ann and Thomas settled on a farm at South Arm, and they had 15 children together.

Thomas died in 1917. Mary Ann died at the Lower Clarence Hospital at Maclean in 1933 after a short illness.
