Joseph Stout was born in Hunterdon County, Province of New Jersey, probably in about 1767. He was the son of Elijah Stout and Martha Mathews.[1]
When he was a boy, Joseph's family migrated from New Jersey to Culpeper County, Virginia, where they were living by 1780 when his father first served in the Culpeper County militia during the American Revolution.[2] He had turned 16 by 1783, when he first appears as a tithable in the household of his father Elijah in Culpeper County.[3] Joseph is also listed by name in Elijah's household in 1787.[4]
Joseph Stout appears listed separately on the Culpeper County tax lists for 1791, two lines above Elijah Stout (who is shown by then with 3 tithables, most likely two younger brothers of Joseph who had also reached the age of 16 by that time). This implies that Joseph had established his own household and may have been married by 1791.[5]
Joseph's wife was Elizabeth Vandyke, the daughter of Peter Vandyke who made his will on 1 May 1816 in Shelby County, Kentucky.[6] Joseph and Elizabeth likely married in Culpeper County, Virginia, possibly in about 1791 based upon their ages and on Joseph's first appearance on the tax lists as his own household in that year.
It appears that by 1803, Joseph and his family had moved from Virginia to Shelby County, Kentucky.[7] Several related Stout families, including Joseph's father Elijah, had moved to this same region around the same time.[2] Joseph and his family were counted in the census in Shelby County in 1810[8] and 1820. In 1820, their household was counted near the households of Joseph's father-in-law "Peter Vandike", and his son-in-law Benjamin Miles.[9]
Joseph Stout died in Shelby County, Kentucky, before March 1821, when his wife Elizabeth and son Peter were appointed adminstrators of his estate. [10]
Children of Joseph Stout and Elizabeth Vandyke include at least:
Based on the 1810 census, two females and a male ages 0-10, do not appear in the 1820 census--they have not been identified, nor are there marriages or records to attribute to them. They likely died young. In the 1820 census, a female age 0-10 is listed, she has not been identified, nor have any records been attached to this female.
The estimated birth year of 1767 and his identity as the son of Elijah Stout is based on his first appearance as a tithable in the household of Elijah in 1783, implying that he turned 16 in about 1783.[3] The location in Hunterdon County, Province of New Jersey, is based on his father's Revolutionary War pension application.[2]
The identity of Joseph's wife as Elizabeth Vandyke, the daughter of Peter Vandyke who made his will on 1 May 1816 in Shelby County, Kentucky, is based on the following:
