Biography

Thomas Stout was born about 1 March 1812 in Blount, Tennessee. He married Sarah Hammontree on 25 Sep. 1842 in Blount County. They were married by John Morton, JP. Sarah and Thomas were the parents of two children, George and John. Sarah died at least before 2 Sep. 1850. Her widower Thomas Stout, acting as guardian of their two children as heirs of their deceased mother "Sarah Stoute formerly Sarah Hammontree deceased" sold Sarah's inheritance in "the old Jeremiah Hammontree tract of land." The sale was for the one-tenth interest of "Sarah Hammontree now Sarah Stoute." Henry Stout was mentioned in the deed as adjoining the old Jeremiah Hammontree tract of land. Sarah and Thomas' son George was named in the deed as either George M. or George W (Blount County Deed Book 16 [W]: 91–92).

Six Mile Creek flooded in 1870, trapping members of the Six Mile Baptist Church inside the church house. The incident was known as the "Stout Flood," since the home of Henry Stout was swept down the creek (Burns, History of Blount County: 119). In 1841 Henry Stout purchased the property of Barnes Holloway on Six Mile Creek. This property had previously belonged to Joseph Holloway (Blount County Deed Book 10 [Q]: 386–87).

Sarah Hammontree Stout's cousin Sarah Ann (Sallie) Hammontree (the daughter of James and Nancy Holloway Hammontree) also married into the Stout family. Sarah Ann Stout married Samuel S. Stout on 13 Apr. 1843 in Blount County. Sarah Hammontree Stout and Sarah Ann (Sallie) Hammontree Stout were first cousins as Holloways and second cousins as Hammontrees. Their husbands Thomas and Samuel Stout appear to have been brothers, both sons of Henry T. Stout. Another brother was Henry D. Stout. Samuel and Sallie are buried in Kakley's Chapel Cemetery in Six Mile.
