"John Stover Fears He'll Hurt Someone" 1891 Newspaper Article: John Stover an aged citizen of Argentine, whose recent exciting history will perhaps be easily recalled to the people of Wyandotte County, was brought here this morning, by Thomas Payne(brother in law), a fellow citizen, and turned over to Sheriff Peterson, who placed him in the County Jail. It is only a few short months ago that Stover was released as cured from the asylum at Ossawatomie KS, where he had been sent as a result of the murder of a young man named, William Mullins in Argentine, 3 years ago. Lately it is said Stover showed frequent signs of returning insanity. It is claimed that last night he attempted to kill members of his family. However Stover seemingly realizing the dangerous character of his malady, and fearing he would harm someone, gave himself up to Mr. Payne, with the desire he be brought to the County Jail. The history of the Stover family has been marked by romance & sensation, in which a prominent part has been played by John Stover's step daughter Martha "Mattie". 3 years ago, William Mullins was prying assiduous attentions to Miss Stover. The old gentleman had ordered young Mullins to keep away, and finding him at the gate one night after this, shot him in the abdomen. Mullins died the next day. After a long trial, it was decided that Stover was insane. 3 years previous to this, Mattie's older sister Eliza Jane was marrying B F Vaughn. A cousin(Abraham Nave) from Little Blue, who seems to have formed a secret attachment for the young lady, was in attendance, and rode on horseback as an escort to the bridal couple who started to drive to Independence that night in a buggy. Near Idependence a shot was fired through the back of the buggy and the groom fell dead. At the same time the cousin on horseback disappeared. *This was Abraham Nave, who then killed himself*
