Biography

Mary was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, on September 2, 1912. She was the daughter, and first of three children, born to George William Stowell, and Mary Ann Spencer. Both her parents had migrated from England. In 1920, at seven years of age, Mary visited England with her cousin Clara Stowell, and her Grandmother, Mary Hannah (Armitage) Stowell. They landed in Liverpool on June 1, 1920, and declared on the manifest, their destination was 206 High Street, in Wibsey, which was part of Bradford, Yorkshire, West Riding. Their visit lasted four months. They returned to New York on October 1, 1920, on the ship "Baltic". This was the same vessel they had departed on to start their journey. Mary returned to Philadelphia, and is seen living in several different locations between 1920, and 1930.

In the 1940 US Census, Mary appears as the wife of Wallace F. Carty, with a two year old daughter, Mary. No marriage license has been found to date. Mary passed away on December 7, 1953 in Philadelphia. Cause of death, listed on her death certificate was "Cirrhosis of the Liver". According to information listed on the death certificate, Mary was a waitress at a Baptist Home (Her father also had listed his employment as an "Engineer" in a Baptist Home). In the 1940 US Census, husband Wallace F. Carty listed his occupation as "Proprietor" of a Tap Room. (Contributing factor to Mary's death?). Mary was buried on December 11, 1953 at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
