Biography

William Straight was born February 14, 1774, in "Finches Run," Virginia, in what would become West Virginia in 1863, during the American Civil War. William is a son of Jacob Straight and Elizabeth Dragoo. In October 1776, Monongalia county was formed from parts of the District of West Augusta (Virginia). It was named in honor of the Monongahela River, named by the Algonquin (Delaware) Indians. The year that William was born, his father had settled land along what would become Straight's Run in the Fairmont District (later Marion county, West Virginia).

In 1799, William married Martha Hays, also born in Monongalia county, a daughter of William and Susanna Hays. William and Martha had at least 12 children, including: Henry Straight; Alexander Straight; Benjamin Straight or Streight; Arizona or Arzanna Mariah Conaway; Susanna Rice; Amos Hayes Straight; Jacob H. Straight; Rachel (Straight) Thorn; Martha Straight; Alpheus Straight; Sarah (Straight) Barrac; and Garlinda (Straight) Thorn.

Martha was born in 1782 and died April 7, 1831, at the age of 49 years. From William's Will, she appeared to have been buried along Straight's Run, near Barrackville. Marion county Virginia was established on January 14, 1842. On November 16, 1843, in Marion county, William married Mrs. Mary (?nee) Freeland. William Straight seems to have adopted the three children of Mary Freeland, by her first marriage to John Freeland, who were William E., Michael and Rebecca, and were shown with surname Straight, in their 1850 Census record. [1]

William Straight died November 25, 1854, in Marion county, Virginia, at the age of 80 years. Note: West Virginia was formed on June 20, 1863, as a result of the American Civil War.

Straight-547 and Straight-532 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. Parent already merged.

Some of these names are triplicates. Possibly a birthdate is a year different due to estimate and then there are also two brothers with same exact birth dates and all three have same death date. These are my aunts, uncles and cousins in the Straight line and originally, it was there and all needed was additional data, but whole data names, etc. has caused a lot of confusion. Database is difficult to merge triplicates as it is basically for duplicate merges.
