Thomas was born about 1836 to Hugh Strain, farmer and Mary McAuley.
Hugh was the son of David Strain of Drumadonnell. Thomas and his father leased house and 3 acres of land from Hon, Robert Meade.
Thomas married in 1853 at the Parish Church, Drumgooland, County Down, to Mary Jane Truesdale, daughter of Samuel. Rector Edward P Brooke performed the ceremony and the 2 witnesses present were James Spiers and William Truesdale.
Six known children were born during the marriage, Mary Ann 1854, Elizabeth Jane 1857, Margaret 1861, William John 1865, Thomas Jr 1869, Samuel 1872 and an unnamed daughter in 1867.
The family moved to Scotland and settled at Airdrie, Lanarkshire where Thomas was employed as an iron worker and later as a general labourer.
Thomas Strain, widower of Mary Jane Truesdale, died in 1908 aged 65 at 119 Aitchison Street, Airdrie. [1]
