Biography

Eleanor, daughter of James Strangeways, Knt., and his first wife Elizabeth Darcy, married Edmund Mauleverer.[1]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Year: Probably after 1435 (about 1436 in datafield). James and Elizabeth married before 27 September 1431. They had 15 children before November 1461, when Elizabeth died. WikiTree profiles for Eleanor's siblings Richard and "Margaret" have birth years of 1633 and 1635, respectively. Richardson's entry for their father lists Richard first among the sons and Eleanor second among the four daughters (with Margery, who married first John Ingleby and second Richard Welles, listed first). born between either Sepetember 1431 or May 1432 (the September 1431 date may be based on when their eldest child was born; the May 1432 date is assuming at least 8 months after marriage in late September 1431).

Additional date considerations:
  • The profile for her father, James, has his birth in 1410, citing Richardson's 2011 Plantagenet Ancestry, which states that he was born in 1415,[2] although no birth year is stated in 2013's Royal Ancestry.[1] The biography in ODNB has his birth circa 1410.[3]
  • The profile for her husband, Edmund Mauleverer, has his birth in 1422.
  • The profile for her son Robert has birth in 1444 (which is a problem with her birth in 1436 or later).
  • Her sister Margaret married her second husband in 1468.[4]

Given Name: The profile's name fields had Elinor, which is how Lewis spells her name.[5] In Royal Ancestry,[1] Richardson spells her name Eleanor and name her sister Margery (rather than Margaret). Margery is also the name Lewis uses.[6])
