John was reputedly the seventh son of John Stratford and Margaret Tracy and was born in about 1545. [1]
In 1584 he received a legacy from his brother in law Robert Lawrence of Shipton Sollers, husband of his sister Eleanor. [2]
John had his will drawn up on 19 Jun 1607. [3]He made bequests to:
As can be seen from his legacies, John seemed to have had a close relationship with his Tracy cousins at Stanway and took some pains to leave bequests to some of Paul Tracy's many daughters.
John died in Aug 1607 and was buried at Stanway, Gloucestershire on 4 Aug 1607. [4]
Wikipedia has conflated this John Stratford with John, the son of his brother Edward Stratford of Winchcombe. [5] John Stratford the entrepreneur and tobacco grower of Winchcombe was born in 1572 and could not possibly be a son of John Stratford and Margaret Tracy as they were well and truly dead by then! When I work out how to edit Wikipedia, I will do so!
To add to the confusion, the record of his burial at Stanway has been indexed on Ancestry as a baptism.
