John was born on the 17 March 1874 at 5 Little Austin Street, in the District of Shoreditch, East End of London, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England[1]. His parents were Charles Stratford and Sarah Dawson.
He is baptized on the 7 April 1874 at the Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Old Nichol Street, Bethnal Green, in the District of Shoreditch, East End of London, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England[2].
John appears with the 1881 Census at 140 Rodney Road, in the District of Newington, South London, just south of the River Thames, and part of the London Borough of Southwark, St Saviour Southwark District, in London and Surrey, England. He lives there with his parents Charles and Sarah and siblings Alfred, Julia, Charles, Mary Ann, Sarah and Eliza[3]. With the arrival of the 1891 Census, they are still at Rodney Street and living with their children Charles, Mary Ann, John, Sarah, Eliza and Richard[4].
With the Census of 1911, he is aboard the "Pegasus" in the City of Hobart, in Tasmania, Australia[5]. The arrival of the 1939 England and Wales Register has John living with his wife Agnes Jemima (Munden/Truscott). Their address is 83 Invicta Road, in the Town of Sheerness, beside the mouth of the River Medway on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, England[6].
The 1891 Census records his occupation as being a General Labourer. By the time of his marriage to Agnes Jemima (Munden/Truscott) he is a Stoker First Class in the Royal Navy. With the 1939 England and Wales Census, his occupation is described as being a Marker in the Naval Rifle Rangers. He is also recorded as being a Stoker P.O. and an R.N. Pensioner.
John (Stratford) enlists in the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on the 15 October 1891. His service number is 163564 and the first ship he serves on is the "Pembroke". He is described as being 5 feet 7 inches tall with a fresh complexion, dark brown hair and blue eyes. John also has a tatoo of a J.R. Anchor with dots on his left forearm.
He is discharged on the 18 October 1913 after serving on the ship "Pembroke 2" and gains his pension on the 22 September 1913[7].
John (Stratford) passes away on the 12 March 1947 at 83 Invicta Road, in the Town of Sheerness, beside the mouth of the River Medway on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, England[8]. He is interred on the 18 March 1947 at the Sheppey Cemetery, Halfway Road, Swale, Isle of Sheppey, North Kent, England. The location of his grave is at Section: J Grave number: 137[9][10].
