Biography

A little about myself. I was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa (Quad-Cities), so I'm a Midwesterner at heart. I have lived in Los Angeles, California for decades where I currently reside. I graduated from a private college in Kentucky (Berea College) and then completed my graduate studies at the University of Illinois. My employment in Los Angeles has been at UCLA. My interests are varied, including college football, soccer, cooking, technology. paranormal. wildlife, and environmental causes. Classical music is dear to me, in particular the Baroque period and the Italian composers, Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni and Arcangelo Corelli. Their music speaks to my soul. History is one particular interest that is close to my heart, and this is how my interest in genealogy ties in. I've always been fascinated how our past has influenced our present lives, and how our ancestors lived be they commoners or aristocrats. Currently, I'm becoming involved with the Magna Carta project on WikiTree, and that is where I will be spending most of my time here which I'm finding quite enjoyable.

My Genealogy

I became interested in my family genealogy in 1994 when I discovered the name of my paternal great great grandfather, Ferdinand Stratmann, in the family Bible. Back then, the Internet was just taking off but there weren't many resources for genealogy. Fortunately, I lived near a Family History Center and researched the old-fashioned way. I actually made a lot of great discoveries about my great great grandfather back then using the 'paper trail'. I was very narrowly focused on just certain particular ancestors.
Today, I have widen my research considerably, thanks to the advancements in Internet resources and DNA. In the past year I have become more focused on the DNA research side of things including Deep Ancestry, using primarily FamilyTree DNA. My recent discoveries with Deep Ancestry is through my Big-Y test at FTDNA which shows that my yDNA ancestors belonged to the Haplogroup R-U152-L2 (Italo-Celtic), around 1300 BCE, the Bronze Age.
My paternal, STRATMANN, side came from Wunnenberg, Germany in the Rhineland area.
The Ship Rebecca my great great grandfather
sailed on to America.
My great great grandfather, Ferdinand Stratmann, arrived through the port of New Orleans in the mid 1800's. He was the only one in his family to leave Germany to begin a new life in America. He set sail from Bremen, Germany aboard the ship Rebecca in 1853.
I've only been able to take my German family back as far as the mid-1700s in Germany.
My father's maternal side were ancestors from Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
I find my richest discoveries on my maternal side, going back to times before our nation was founded. My mother's side is heavily English with a solid lineage from Scotland as well. It is from my mother's side that carries the following ancestors and notables.

Highland Chieftain from ca. 1680
by John Michael Wright

  • Dugal McQueen, My 7th great grandfather, and my most prominent Scottish ancestor.
Dugal McQueen, a Highlander believed to have lived in Strathdearn at Corryborough on the Findhorn River near Inverness, participated in the Jacobite Rebellion or Jacobite Risings in 1715. This was the second major Jacobite Rebellion, the others taking place in 1689 and 1745. He was captured at Preston, England along with hundreds of others and held prisoner at Lancaster Castle. He was banished to America in chains aboard the ship, Friendship, sailing from Belfast. He landed at Baltimore, Maryland, where he was sold into indentured servitude for approximately seven years to William Holland, Esq., and then provided with land in Baltimore County, then Frederick County, and now known as Carroll County, Maryland, he began a new life and remarried. His family was close to the Brown and Logsdon families where the McQueen bloodline entered into my direct ancestral line.

Robert Clarke came from England and arrived within four years of the settlement of St. Mary's Maryland to provide shipment of goods for Indians, representing a Roman Catholic Missionary of the Jesuit order. Clarke sat as a freeman in the legislature and in 1648 he was appointed Survery-General of Maryland.
During the rise of Puritanism, and the Battle Severn in 1655 he was taken prisoner by the Puritans and sentenced to be hanged. However, he was saved by petition but lost much of his fortune and land holdings. A year later, his plantations were restored.
Winifred Seybourne emigrated to Maryland from England in 1638. On 30 July 1638 Lord Baltimore personally issued instructions for a warrant of 100 acres for Mistress Winifred Seyborne [Seaborne] for transporting herself. She became the wife of Robert Clarke upon the death of her husband, Thomas Greene, 2nd Propreitary Governor of Maryland.
Robert Clarke and Winifred Seybourne are my direct ancestors through my Clark ancestry.

As told through lore down through the generations, Honora O'Flynn was a beautiful, flaming red head Irish girl from County Kerry, Ireland who was kidnapped by the British off the coast of Ireland, and brought to Maryland for barter. Honora was bought by William Logsdon for a hogshead (barrel) of tobacco. They would marry in Baltimore, Maryland in 1702. William was transported as an indentured servant to Maryland in 1674 by Captain Samuel Smith of Virginia, where he took up land in Baltimore County. Honora was a pious Catholic and it was through her that the Catholic faith appears in the various family lines. She is known in Logsdon family lore as the "Captive Maiden".

Jonathan Bozarth or Bozorth, served in the 8th Pennsylvania Continental Line from Sep 1776 to Sep 1779 in the Revolutionary War. With the 8th Pennsylvania he spent the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge. Jonathan served as a Captain in the Hardin County, Kentucky Militia in 1798.

Capt. William Knox of Rowan County, North Carolina served in the Revolutionary War and died when he was shot and killed accidently by his own men. He died on July 19, 1776.

Thomas and Joseph Logsdon were personal friends and guides to George Washington. George Washington mentions them in his diary in September 1784.

My following ancestors were American Patriots in the Revolutionary War:

He was in the 8th Regiment (Wilcox's) Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812.
Also served for the 13 Regiment (Gray's) Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812.

Both of my uncles were brothers that died in their early twenties serving in the 13th Kentucky Regiment for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Interesting Connections To History

Miriam Ingram Short was a passenger aboard the Welcome ship along with William Penn as part of William Penn's Pennsylvania Settlers community. She died on board from the smallpox outbreak in 1682. Her daughter, Miriam Short, my 7th great grandmother, was also a passenger and she settled in Chester, Pennsylvania.
She was the wife of John Harrison Surratt, accused and tried for conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln but was set free. Mary Victorine Hunter was also the second cousin of Francis Scott Key.

Sarah Borden was the wife of Jonathan Holmes, son of Obadiah Holmes. Jonathan Holmes' sister Lydia Holmes married John Bowne Sr. and they would be the 4th great grandparents of President Abraham Lincoln. Richard Henry Dana, III married Edith Longfellow, daughter of the great American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow would be the father-in-law of Richard Henry Dana, III.
These Coppock brothers were followers of John Brown and they participated in Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. The Coppock brothers were raised in Springdale, Iowa, where they met Brown while he was raising support for his Kansas anti-slavery raids. Edwin was hanged in Charlestown, Virginia. Susannah Lawton married Thomas Cornell the son of Thomas Cornell Jr., (father-in-law of Susannah Lawton), who was accused, tried, convicted and hanged for the alleged murder of his mother, Rebecca Briggs Cornell (grandmother-in-law of Susannah Lawton), in Portsmouth in 1673. He was convicted using spectral evidence, where witnesses recounted dreams involving ghosts pointing to his alleged guilt. This case and its history has been the subject of the book Killed Strangely: The Death of Rebecca Cornell (2002) by Elaine Forman Crane.
Countess Muriel White von Seherr-Thoss (1880 - 1943) was an American, daughter of U.S. Ambassador Henry White. Muriel White married Count Herman von Seherr-Thoss, from an historic German family of nobility. With the impending clouds of Nazi Germany and War on the horizon, Muriel White relocated her two sons to America in Connecticut. At this time Countess Muriel White was residing at Castle Burgwasser aka Dobrau Palace in Poland. She was often followed and harrassed by the Nazi gestapo and on March 1943 as the Nazi gestapo was approaching her palace. Muriel White committed suicide by jumping from the second story window of her palace.
Edward Mecom was the husband of Jane Franklin, the sister of Benjamin Franklin making him the brother-in-law of Benjamin Franklin.

I am extremely proud of many in my family tree who were hard working farmers. We often give recognition to the 'notables' but overlook those in our families who toiled and worked hard to raise their families and make all our lives better. This family is one example, Elizabeth Durbin, my great great aunt, (front center) and her family from Kentucky. I figure this photo to be circa 1860's, Civil War era.

Closing Comments

I know for each of us genealogy has a specific purpose. In my case, my goals are to take my genealogy as far back in history as I can. I have always been a historian at heart and I become excited when I can link my family to historical events and people. Probably my biggest goals are to discover a direct gateway ancestor, and my English and Scottish roots which make up a majority of my autosomal DNA.
I welcome anyone to contact me with additional information or discrepancies. If I can ever assist anyone please contact me. Genealogy is always a work in progress and we are all in this together.

BORDEN
My 6th great grandmother is Innocent Borden from New Jersey and connected to the notable and historic Borden families from New England. Origin of the Borden (de Bourdon) name is probably from Normandy, France in the 12th century.
CLARKE
I'm most interested in Robert Clarke, Surveyor General of Maryland in 1600s who married Winifred Seybourne.
DURBIN
My great great grandmother, Margaret Isobel Durbin, introduced a very rich genealogical bloodline into my maternal side of the family, connecting me with the Logsdon, Durbin, O'Flynn, McQueen, Howard families.
EUROARISTO
HINTON
Hinton from Maryland married into the Howard family. There is a possibility that Sir Thomas Hinton and Catherine Palmer of Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire, England are related. I would like to see better primary documentary evidence .
HOWARD
I'm most interested in my Howard ancestry from Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
LOGSDON
MAGNA_CARTA
MCGILL
My 5th great grandfather, Thomas McGill from North Carolina married into the Knox family. From recent DNA matches I am confident this Knox is the daughter of Capt. William Knox and Margaret Allen of Rowan, North Carolina.
MCQUEEN
Dugal McQueen, my most notable Scottish ancestor from late 1600s who participated in the Jacobite Rebellion, and may possibly be a gateway ancestor.
RHODE_ISLAND
Researching historical figures connected to my Borden bloodline in Rhode Island.
SHAW
Recent research with documentation and DNA has confirmed that my 3rd great grandmother, Rebecca Shaw is related to the Bozorth and Borden families in Grayson County, Kentucky, Virginia, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Also, my 3rd great-grandfather Robert Whitfill married her sister, Elizabeth Shaw. This has connected me to the historic and notable Borden families of New England.
STRATMANN
My paternal side, ancestors from Wunnenberg, Germany.
TATTERSHALL
My 8th great grandmother Mary Tattershall from Wiltshire, England, a Catholic recusant who immigrated to Maryland. Her lineage most probably descends from Sir Robert de Tateshall of medieval England.
TITANIC
I'm currently working on the Thayer famly, 1st Class Passengers on the Titanic.
UNITED_KINGDOM
US_CIVIL_WAR
WARNER
My 9th great grandfather was James Warner of Norfolk, Virginia and then Anne Arundel, Maryland whose daughter married into my Howard ancestry.
WHITFILL
My maternal side, arrived in late 1600s to Maryland from England as recusant Catholics. Name was probably originally spelled as 'Whitfield'.

Thanks for the note.

Maybe we'll be able to DNA confirm our 9th cousin relation someday to Robert Clarke and his wife?

Again. Please look at Jane Wadham where I have laid out the evidence to support the marriage of Margaret Seymour to Sir Nicholas Wadham not Sir William.

Me again. Found the source Wikipedia uses about Margaret Seymour and added it to her profile. What does Richardson say? I don't have access. C

HI, James. would you have a look at Margaret Seymour please? We have her as wife of William Wadham, Wikipedia as wife of Nicholas Wadham. I am doing some work on her daughters, Jane and Katherine and would like to attach them but not to the wrong father.
