John was born at Chancefield Farm, Falkland Parish, Fife on 7 Jul 1819 and Christened on 20 Jul. [1]
For the initial part of his life he lived and worked Chancefield but then moved, at some point prior to 1851, to the Backfield Pitcairn Farm on the Leslie Estates. On the 1851 Census he is listed as the farmer's son and aged 31.[2]
On a historical note it seems that John and his father Thomas, and other elements of the family, moved from the Falkland Estates to the Leslie Estates, which were nearly neighbours, around the mid to late 1830's. The family occupied the Backfield Pitcairn farm which was a smaller farm than the Chancefield farm at Falkland. John, as the oldest son, went with Thomas while the other sons took other paths. These were probably the last of the hereditary tenant farmers.
More investigation is needed as to reasons for the move but it may be associated with a reorganisation of the Falkland estates at around this time.
