Biography

John Stratton was born 04 May 1689 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Mass. Bay Colony, the son of John and Abigail (Prentice) Stratton.[1]

He was named as an heir in his grandfather Stratton's will in 1708, and was given his "fowling piece".[2]

Based on his probate records, John left a widow named Mercy, who then married Christoper Grant. (There is a marriage in the Boston records which reads "Christopher Grant & Mercy Stratton Married on Nov. 15, 1739"). John Stratton's eldest son was named Joshua, and there were at least four younger siblings who were minors in 1740.[3]

"[1689] John Straton Son of John and Abigall borne the 4th of May 1689."[4]

Burial

Interred in Old Arlington Cemetery, Watertown, Massachusetts.

Probate

Mercy Stratton, widow, Samuel Stratton, weaver, & Jabez Stratton, cordwainer, all of Watertown, gave bond 12 Jan 1735 as widow Mercy was given adminstration on her late husband's estate. An inventory of his estate was taken 23 & 26 Jan 1735/6. The inventory included his shop with two looms, and other weaving tools. There were 4 cows and a heiffer, two horses and a colt. The real estate included a house & lot of 25 acres, barn & shop, and 23 acres of various other lots, one which was said to be "Three acres & half of mowing land - formerly Trains." The total of the inventory was £973.[5]

When the real estate was appraised and divided for the widow's thirds in March 1739/40, the widow Mercy was called "the now wife of Cristopher Grant. She was granted her widow's thirds in the house, barn and adjoining land.[6]

Samuel Stratton, guardian of Joshua Stratton & John Coolledge husbandmen, both of Watertown, were given settlement on behalf of John Stratton's "eldest son Joshua Stratton" two thirds part of the estate in March 1739/40. Samuel Stratton's expense account is included. An expense account of Isaac Holdin, "guardian for four children of John Stratton, deceased, minors.[7]
